This week was really fun! I actually enjoyed doing the video work. Especially actually being about to watch movies and reading about the cinematic techniques. Anyways.. Let’s see how it went!
As always, it was a pleasure to be able to listen and tweet along to the radio shows this week. I thought both shows that I listened to were very well done!
My reflection went all the way back to the beginning of the show and being unsure about a group project for an online class to the success of our show, specifically our sound effects! Pay close attention to my advice to future ds106-ers!
For the video essay assignment, I watched “A Postman Always Rings Twice” and I elaborated on one of the scenes to show my knowledge and my now keen eye to cinematic techniques through Ebert’s writing and the videos that I got to watch this week! I liked being able to read the Ebert article and using the videos posted to actually be able to take a critical eye when watching the classical noir films. It definitely made me think about how the camera angles and the effects really aid to the overall meaning of the film.
4 stars – Character Description of Sylvia Stone using Jessica Rabbit ft. another Noir character
4 stars – Tutorial of How to Open a Padlock!
#1 – Step Goals on how to be a veterinarian
#2 – Blurry Photography Art
What a good week to make some art!
For this video assignment, I decided to do a tutorial for opening a lock in 30 seconds (or less!). I was successful at completing this task. To record, I used my photobooth app on my laptop and moved them over into iMovie so I could do overlapping with words and compile everything together!
For this Video Assignment, I did the character description assignment where you’re supposed to use found video clips to compile a video that would describe the personality of a character. I put a little twist on this assignment and used Jessica Rabbit to portray the character of my Noir Character Sylvia Stone! Sylvia Stone is a man slaying, jaw dropping, bombshell who likes to entice men into falling in love with her and from these video clips, she does just that. I’m using this to also include another noir character from our class to be the seductee, which is Lawrence, Tiffany Yowell’s noir character. He is actually falling for the seduction of Sylvia.
In order to create this video, I went on youtube to find some clips of Jessica Rabbit. After I had found some that I really thought would fit the character of Sylvia, I put them through the Vid4 Video Converter so I could add them into iMovie on my computer to start the mesh and copying/pasting process.
First off, I’m going to start this by apologizing for the amount of um’s and hair flips you’re about to witness.
For this assignment, I decided to go ahead and pick a scene from the movie “A Postman Only Rings Twice”. My first thought was to go ahead and YouTube the clip of the movie I wanted! Luckily it was actually already clipped around the part I wanted. I used 4k Video Download to convert the video into a clip that I could save to my desktop. I then used iMovie on my macbook pro and then did my own recording for my analysis! Here we go!
Aw, this was a fun run with radio shows but unfortunately even good things have to come to an end. Like I’ve said in many of my posts before, I was really concerned when I saw that there was a group project for an online class! It threw me for a bit of a loop. However, I think it was still by far one of the smoothest and most functioning group project I have ever done. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
As for how our radio show project turned out, I think we did really well collaborating on the script for the show and actually doing the execution. Unfortunately, the snow put dampers on our meeting times but we were still able to send clips to one another and get it compiled with ease. However, I wish we were able to have physically met in person! As everyone has complemented us on, our sound effects were so on point (not to toot our own horn or anything…. ) but I think it really tied the story together and gave it more depth!
All in all, I thought it was a fun project that came together with a really great outcome. I could not have asked for a better group to have as my partners!
My advice to future DS106-ers, DO NOT PUT IT OFF. Get started on it as soon as you get the assignment, not only will it be reflected in your work but it will also decrease a lot of stress for yourself.
This week for the radio show listen along, I listened to both Noir at Night and Silk Road. I know we’re technically only supposed to discuss one of them but I feel really compelled to discuss both of them because after all I did listen to BOTH OF THEM!
For Noir at Night, I thought the concept was really interested. For example, the way they talked about how something was Noir then did a trailer to prove their point. I thought that was very different from the other shows I had heard and it was definitely a killer concept. Only thing I would recommend for this show, which I think it was brought up a few times during the tweet-a-long, is to make sure you dig deeper into why something is Noir and what elements made it so! Otherwise, I thought it was a really cool concept and I though sound wise it was executed well!
For Silk Road, I thought the story line was wonderful and their were some seriously awesome sound effects used to execute the scenes. The sound effects made it seem like you were actually there and you could feel the sounds as if they were in the room next to you! I was really impressed with how well they had the voices meshing together at the same decibel level. I was really impressed overall with this show, kudos to the creators!
For this daily create, I thought of my biggest goal that I want to achieve in the near future and it is actually to get into veterinarian school! It’s been a childhood dream of mine as far as I can remember. So I just took some sharpies and made steps, each one represents a goal that I have to achieve to get to vet school (I even went a little beyond — “do married things”)
For this daily create, it was literally just me taking a picture of my dream catcher using my phone camera while shaking to get the blurred effect. This is art. Damnit.
This week was pretty hectic especially since I did not keep up with all of my assignments during the week as I usually like to. However, I still thought everything from this week that I did turned out pretty well, let’s check it out!

Business card assignment
Do you think your man is cheating on you? Do you want to test it out to make sure he is being faithful and won’t fall for two extremely beautiful women? Well, we have the company for you. For a flat fee, we will make sure your man isn’t being unfaithful and if he is, then well… we’ll take care of the rest.
Above is our business card for the MaNOIRpulators business. To make this I used a template online which allows you to make a faux business card to preview. I used both my character and again, Kendall Parker’s character because we were the seducers in our radio show. I made up some facts for our business and used the logo that I made for our radio show as the logo for the card!
For this assignment I did the writing assignment entitled “Dear Diary” but instead of doing this in the perspective of a Disney Villian, I am doing it in the perspective of my noir character Sylvia while using Lawrence, Tiffany Yowell’s character as my character’s love interest.
It’s me again. I know I haven’t written in awhile but between the visits to the Black Widow and the travelling around the globe to find the murderer of Jewel’s and My friend I haven’t found the time to write anything. Diary, I think I have a crush. These are words that I never thought would come out of my mouth. A CRUSH. His name is Lawrence. He’s so mysterious and handsome. He’s a murderer, just like me! Two peas in a pod, like grandmother always used to say. I couldn’t see myself falling in love again after all of the men who I have seen mistreat their women for me but this man, Diary, he’s different. He’s unique. He give me butterflies. He’s… someone I couldn’t see myself seducing with anyone else, I want him all to myself. Alllllll mine, Diary. Heck, the jealous is rumbling inside of me just telling you about him. I write all day for a living and this is something I have found the hardest to put pen to paper on.
I love him, but could he handle my maNOIRpulating lifestyle? Could I handle his mysterious darkness?
This is ridiculous, I know this will never work. I’m too much of an evil woman who will never halt to the thought of loving a single man. I love the thrill of the murder, the thrill of the chase.. I’m not ready to commit to anything besides a murder.
Yours truly, xoxo,
